Outreach

Hartford (VT) High students visit Dartmouth to learn computer-enhanced light microscopy under the guidance of Professor of Biological Sciences Roger Sloboda and lab technicians Ann Lavanway, Corinne Pierce, and Amelia Lyman.

Institutions of higher education serve the public good by engaging in issues of societal concern.  An issue of growing importance nationally is the understanding of science and the role and impact it has in our lives.

In keeping with Dartmouth"™s mission, the Office of Outreach assists Dartmouth faculty and students in developing academic outreach that promotes science awareness, science education and science literacy.  We facilitate faculty and student involvement in activities that communicate the relevance of science for public policy and in projects that promote public interest, understanding, and involvement in science, technology, math and engineering.  This includes national efforts as well as regional efforts, such as science or math enrichment for local schools and professional development workshops for teachers and for members of the high tech workforce.

Reporting to Dartmouth"™s Vice Provost for Research, the Office of Outreach helps faculty throughout the institution develop the outreach components of research proposals, identify potential partners and share institutional resources. The Office also coordinates information sharing among Dartmouth"™s science outreach partners and programs and communicates the outcomes and impact of Dartmouth research.
