Dear Colleagues,
I am happy to announce the appointment of Tom Crady as Dean of the College effective January 2008. I am sure that he will bring energy and vision to this position and that we will all benefit from his experience in and enthusiasm for student life.
I would also like to thank Dan Nelson for his continuing work as interim dean. Dan has served the College well and has moved several important initiatives forward. I would also like to thank Barry Scherr and his committee for the outstanding work they did with this search. They identified a talented pool of candidates and I was pleased to accept their strong recommendation in support of Tom Crady.
I know that you will join me in welcoming Tom to campus this winter. I have enclosed the news release below.

HANOVER, NH - Dartmouth President James Wright announced today that he has appointed Thomas M. Crady, the vice president for student services at Iowa's Grinnell College, as Dean of the College at Dartmouth, effective January 2008.
Crady has worked at Grinnell since 1982, where his experience and responsibilities in student life and student affairs have steadily increased. He has served as associate dean of student affairs, dean of student affairs, vice president and dean for student affairs. Since 1998 he has held the position of vice president for student services. Also in his time at Grinnell he served as acting dean of admission and financial aid and supervised the area for seven years in addition to student affairs.
At Dartmouth, the Dean of the College has responsibility for a wide range of offices and activities relating to undergraduate students. Crady will oversee the First-Year Office and the Upperclass Deans Office, the Office of Residential Life, the Office of Student Life, the Department of Safety and Security, the Office of Career Services, the College Health Service, the Office of Counseling and Human Development, the Outdoor Programs Office, the Dartmouth College Athletics Department, the Native American Program, the Academic Skills Center, the Women's Resource Center, the Dartmouth Skiway, Morton Farm, and the Hanover Country Club.
In announcing the appointment, President Wright said, "Tom's commitment to and experience with undergraduate student life is extensive. He understands the importance of the out-of-classroom experience, and I am confident that all Dartmouth students will benefit from Tom's leadership in this area."
Crady said, "I'm very excited to become part of the Dartmouth community. I look forward to learning more about the Dartmouth culture and working closely with the wide range of Dartmouth students, faculty, and staff. It will be a pleasure and an honor to continue my work in such a strong academic community.
Crady brings more than 24 years of experience to Dartmouth. At Grinnell, he has been responsible for large construction programs; a variety of student services, groups, and centers; academic advising initiatives; and student social programs and cultural activities. He served on many administrative committees involving academic standing, student life, strategic planning, athletics, and the budget.
Crady is a member of numerous professional organizations, including having served as the Region IV East Vice President of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators; twice participating in the Oxford Roundtable on the Residential College in Oxford, England; and membership in the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. He has consulted for Carleton College, Beloit College, and Oberlin College. His volunteer activities include membership on the board for the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce and participation on the subcommittee on harassment for the City of Grinnell. He has also been actively involved in Grinnell-area United Way activities.
Crady earned his bachelor's degree at Northern Michigan University, majoring in speech communication with a minor in geography and Earth science. His master's degree, also from Northern Michigan University, focused on guidance and counseling, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University is in education.
