To: Members of the President's Administrative Form
Late last year, when Stuart Lord agreed to become the interim vice-president
for Institutional Diversity and Equity, it was with the assumption that we
would likely have a permanent head of the office in place by this summer. It is
now clear that we are at least some months away from making that appointment.
Hence, Stuart will step down from this role.
In addition, he will take a leave from his duties at the College from early
August into the fall term in order to engage in some professional development
and to attend to family matters, while Richard Crocker continues to serve as
interim dean. As some of you may know, Stuart and his wife Adderly have adopted
a child who will be coming to live with them shortly.
I want to thank Stuart for taking on the role of Interim Vice President;
during his time in this position he has brought his customary energy and
enthusiasm to that role and has helped further our goals for diversity on this
campus.
Holly Sateia, the Dean of Student Life, has agreed to take over the interim
role. During her time at Dartmouth, Holly has been committed to creating and
improving opportunities to make our campus a more diverse and inclusive
community. Her involvement with diversity work began with her time in the
Admissions Office where a portion of her assignment was to oversee recruitment
efforts directed at increasing the numbers of students-of-color at Dartmouth.
As Dean of Student Life, she has served on numerous campus-wide committees that
have recommended and assessed the College's progress towards promoting
diversity. She serves as the coordinator for the diversity efforts in the Dean
of the College area and, as such, she has chaired their divisional Diversity
Committee and the Campus Climate Committee, and served recently as a member of
the division's Diversity Hiring Committee.
She was instrumental in the creation of the Office of Pluralism and
Leadership which provides multicultural education and support for Dartmouth
undergraduates. She has been elected to the steering committee of the
Consortium of High Achievement and Success (CHAS) a collaboration between 34
selective liberal arts colleges working together to improve the success and
satisfaction of students of color and first generation college students on
their campuses. In addition, she has served as a consultant to numerous New
England colleges regarding the ways that they can better achieve their
diversity goals. Recently she was recognized and received a national award for
her campus diversity work.
I am pleased that Holly will be assuming the position of Interim
vice-president for Institutional Diversity and Equity and look forward to
working with her in the months ahead. Barry Scherr
