From: Holly Sateia, Dean of Student Life

To: Members of the President's Administrative Forum

I am happy to announce the appointment of Sylvia Spears as the new Director of the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and Associate Dean of Student Life.

Sylvia comes to us from the University of Rhode Island where she was an assistant professor for human development and family studies. In this capacity she served as a faculty member in the College Student Personnel program, teaching graduate courses in Cultural Competence in Human Services, Diversity Topics in Higher Education and Legal Issues in Student Affairs. She also collaborated with student affairs practitioners on diversity related training for professional and student staff, provided academic advisement for undergraduates and served as a liaison to the Center for Leadership Development in Student Affairs. Her campus involvement led her to serve in leadership positions on various university committees including the President's Commission on the Status of Women, The President's Commission on the Status of Faculty, Staff and Students of Color, and the Native American Advisory Board to name a few. She served on several student affairs committees and collaborated with the Special Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs on the development of a GLBTQ advisory board.

Past positions have included serving as the interim affirmative action officer at URI and the assistant director of multicultural student services at Bryant College where she was responsible for the administration of the Office of Multicultural Student Services as well as providing direct support services for students of color and international students. She has also served as the Tribal Administrator for the Narragansett Indian Tribe which encompassed the overall management of the Tribe's administrative offices, administering and monitoring federal grants and contracts and supervision of staff.

Sylvia will be moving to the Upper Valley in June and will assume her responsibilities in the OPAL Office on July 1, 2007. I invite you to join me in extending a warm welcome to Sylvia and her family.
