November 30, 2006

From: Dan Nelson, Acting Dean of the College

To: President's Administrative Forum

The following announcement was sent to all students from Dan Nelson, and he asked that it be shared with the PAF.

Dear Students:

I am writing as a follow up to President Wright's message earlier this week about the police investigation of an incident involving four non-students who allegedly threatened a Dartmouth student. The College has been informed by Hanover Police that the four non-students, who are believed to be high school students from Vermont, have admitted responsibility for the series of incidents recently reported to DoSS and the Hanover Police involving the making of derogatory remarks from a motor vehicle. The Hanover Police are continuing to investigate and considering the charges that might be brought. I will be contacting the principal of the high school attended by these individuals to convey my concern and to discuss ways in which this situation might be addressed within the school.

Obviously, it is a great relief to know that individuals who caused so much distress to the College community have been identified, but this is no reason for complacency. The issues discussed at yesterday's rally remain, no less, significant issues for our community and remain our shared responsibility to address.

If at any time you experience threats or other behaviors of this sort, please contact the Department of Safety and Security immediately (646-4000).

Best wishes for a successful conclusion to this term and for a restful vacation.
