From: James Wright, President
To: President's Administrative Forum
Dear Colleagues,
President Shirley Ann Jackson of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will
announce later today the appointment of William Walker as Vice President for
Strategic Communications and External Relations. I wish Bill the very best in
his new position; he has been an excellent colleague and a good friend who
established this important vice presidency at Dartmouth.
Bill's new position is clearly an opportunity for a more comprehensive set
of responsibilities. He will oversee public affairs, as he has here, and he
will also be in charge of government and community relations and a range of
other programs, including university-wide integrated marketing communications
and branding, strategic communications on federal, state and local political
issues, and alumni communications. He and Sonnie will be returning to an area
where they have lived and know well. We will miss them both.
Bill Walker came to Dartmouth in 2001 as the first Vice President for Public
Affairs. Previously he had served in similar positions at Rutgers University,
the College of William and Mary, and Skidmore College. As Vice President, Bill
has worked tirelessly to promote the College and its faculty and students. He
has effectively coordinated communications across the institution, has led an
emerging College-wide branding program, and helped lead the redesign of the
Dartmouth College public Web presence. I and my senior colleagues have
benefited enormously from his advice and wisdom. Sonnie has played a central
role as the Associate Director of the Institute for Information Infrastructure
Protection, and we will surely miss her as well. Bill will remain in his
current position until the end of January, and Sonnie has agreed to stay on
until April.
We will appoint a search committee for Bill's successor and announce an
interim plan shortly. In the meantime, I hope that you will join me in
congratulating Bill on his appointment and will wish him and Sonnie the very
best. President Jackson and her colleagues at RPI are surely lucky to count
Bill and Sonnie Walker as members of their community.
