Dartmouth appoints Meredith Braz Registrar
HANOVER, N.H. – Meredith Horton Braz, currently Administrative Dean for
Academic Systems and Registrar at Bates College, has been appointed Registrar
for Dartmouth College, effective Nov. 1, 2006. Carol Folt, Dean of the Faculty,
announced the appointment.
Braz will oversee the Dartmouth Registrar's Office, which provides academic
and enrollment services for Dartmouth faculty, students, alumni and staff.
Folt said, "I am very pleased that Meredith has accepted our offer to serve
as Dartmouth's next Registrar. As the academic officer responsible for the
planning, organization, and record-keeping of instructional activities, she
clearly has the depth and breadth of experience to lead the Registrar's Office
into the future. The Associate Deans and I look forward to working with her to
strengthen the academic services we provide students and faculty."
Braz's appointment follows a nationwide search headed by Associate Dean of
the Faculty for the Sciences C. Robertson McClung. McClung, who chaired the
search committee which included Chris Strenta, Gary Hutchins, Ginny Hazen,
Margaret Funnell, Gail Zimmerman and Lindsay Whaley, said, "The committee is
delighted at Meredith's appointment. During her interview, we were all very
favorably impressed with the depth of her registrarial experience and with her
ability to interact effectively with faculty, students and administrators. We
all look forward very much to working with her at Dartmouth." Braz succeeds
Registrar Polly Griffin who served as Registrar from 1999 to 2006 when she
accepted a position as Registrar for Princeton University. In the interim, the
position was filled by Thomas Bickel.
Braz said she was "elated and energized by the prospect of joining the
Dartmouth community as Registrar of the College." She added "I was drawn to
Dartmouth's commitment to undergraduate education, its talented students, staff
and faculty, and its beautiful campus. A registrar enjoys a unique position
that is central to the institution, allowing opportunities to be a resource and
facilitator of information and change. I look forward to continuing the
development of partnerships with the many academic and administrative areas at
Dartmouth to offer exceptional service for the constituents of such an
outstanding institution."
Braz is a graduate of St. Lawrence University in Canton , N.Y. and received
a Master of Arts in Teaching from Smith College. She spent 15 years in the
Bates College Registrar's Office, starting as Assistant Registrar in 1991 and
progressing to Registrar, Registrar and Director of Student Financial Services
and finally Registrar and Administrative Dean for Academic Systems before
coming to Dartmouth. Prior to her tenure at Bates, she taught in Massachusetts
and Vermont schools. Braz also worked in the Sophia Smith Collection, a Women's
History Archive at Smith College, at Williston-Northampton School and at the
Yarmouth Historical Society.
She has served as Vice President for Professional Development and Chair of
the Nominations Committee for the New England Association of Collegiate
Registrars and Admissions Counselors (NEACRAO), and as a member of American
Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) task
force to study the impact of utilizing outsourcing in Registrar and Admissions
offices. She also served a three year term on the Small College Issues
Committee and is a frequent presenter at the AACRAO national meetings. Braz is
recognized as a national expert on topics such as implementing web
registration, course proposal and class schedule creation strategies, online
course evaluation, merging offices and re-engineering, and developing a campus
FERPA tutorial.
