From: Barry Scherr, Provost

To: President's Administrative Forum

I am writing to inform you that Karl Furstenberg has decided to retire as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the end of the academic year, on July 1, 2007. Karl has been a highly effective administrator and a fine colleague during his years at Dartmouth, and I know you join me in extending to him warm thanks for all his superb work.

Karl came to Dartmouth in 1990 from Wesleyan University, where he had overseen admissions for some thirteen years. He became Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid in 1992, and six years later also took on the responsibility of Associate Provost for Planning, overseeing the reestablishment of Dartmouth's Office of Institutional Research and serving as an adviser to the provost.

A mere listing of titles, however, can only hint at Karl's enormous contributions to Dartmouth. He has provided strong leadership for the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid; as a result, during his time in Hanover we have continued to admit classes that are ever more talented and diverse, while our financial aid packages are among the very best in the country. On numerous occasions he has represented us well, both on campus and in the wider academic community, on matters concerning the admissions process and financial aid. I, and the other senior officers at Dartmouth, have frequently benefitted from his thoughtful observations regarding institutional planning and higher education policy. While we will miss him, we are looking forward to enjoying his lively presence and fine leadership for the remainder of the year as we select the class of 2011.

We will begin the search for Karl's successor later this fall.
