From: Dan Nelson, Acting Dean of the College
To: Members of the President's Administrative Forum
A few days ago I shared the announcement that Mary Liscinsky, who had been
covering my responsibilities as Senior Associate Dean while I have been serving
as Acting Dean of the College, has been asked by the Provost to serve this
coming year as Acting Director of the Office of Equal Opportunity and
Affirmative Action. In that message, I mentioned that I would soon make a
decision about covering Mary's responsibilities here in the Dean of the College
Office and requested suggestions about who might be called upon to do that. I
appreciate the good advice and suggestions many of you have shared, and that
indeed informed this decision. I'm happy to announce that as of July 1, Kate
Burke will be covering Mary's responsibilities here in the Dean of the College
Office until Mary returns from the EO/AA Office.
That means that while I continue to serve as Acting Dean of the College,
Kate will serve as Acting Senior Associate Dean. In that capacity, Kate will be
working directly with the Academic Skills Office, the Accessibility Office, the
First Year and Upperclass Deans, the Department of Safety and Security, and
staff in the Dean of the College Office. She will also be representing our
division on a number of College committees and working groups, working closely
with the Judicial Affairs Office, and managing a number of special projects.
Once the Dean of the College position is filled and I return to my Senior
Associate responsibilities, Kate will fill Mary's previous responsibilities as
Assistant Dean, where she will work closely with other senior staff and
directors in the division to respond effectively to student concerns, serve as
alternate chair of the COS and the OAC, oversee divisional publications, and
manage special projects.
Kate has worked at Dartmouth, most often in the Dean of the College
division, since 1987. She served as Acting Dean of Upperclass Students this
past year, as a class dean for the Classes of 1993, 1996 and 1999, and as
Acting Senior Associate Dean during the 1998-99 academic year. She has also
worked within the Provost and President's divisions and has served on a number
of important College committees over the years. She is a graduate of the
University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine School of Law. She and
her family live in Hartland, Vt.
Please join me in welcoming Kate to her new assignment and thanking her for
taking on this new set of responsibilities. Sincerely, Dan Nelson
