Staff and Alumni Are Invited to Help Rebuild Biloxi with Tucker
Foundation
Ninety percent of the buildings on the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi, were
destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Dartmouth alumni and their family members are
invited to join staff and faculty in helping to rebuild Biloxi in a service
trip organized by the Tucker Foundation June 16–23, 2007. Led by Dr. Stuart
Lord, dean of the Tucker Foundation, and Frederica Ghesquiere '04, the
Dartmouth team will participate along with volunteers from around the country
in construction projects organized by Hands On Gulf Coast.
Staff and alumni will help demolish houses, remove mold, haul rubble, do
carpentry work, put up drywall, and do other tasks. No construction experience
is required. On the first two days of the trip, participants will have
orientation sessions and visit the region; the next five days will be spent
working at the construction. During the evening, volunteers will make plans for
the next day and may meet city representatives, socialize, and participate in
reflection sessions led by Dean Lord.
"This is an opportunity for alumni and staff to have the kind of powerful
experience that students have on their Katrina education and service trips,"
says Ghesquiere.

The cost of food and communal lodging in a Hands On facility will be on a
sliding scale; participants make and pay for their own travel arrangements. The
Tucker Foundation has twelve spots reserved for alumni and eight for staff.
Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis website:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/~tucker/servicetrips/gulfcoast/alumni/ at the
foundation Web site, beginning at noon on May 15.
A category 5 hurricane that made landfall on August 29, 2005, Katrina was
the costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. More than
1,800 people lost their lives in Katrina and the floods in its aftermath.
Remember REGISTRATION BEGINS ONLINE AT NOON ON TUESDAY MAY 15.
