Implementation of President Hanlon’s Moving Dartmouth Forward Plan is beginning immediately. There are now several opportunities for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in committing time and energy.
Inaugural house professors will be named before the end of the 2015 spring term. We invite applications for six new positions, each of which will lead a house community. In partnership with the Provost and the Dean of the College, house professors will collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to build vibrant residences that promote academic engagement, a sense of community, and continuity. House professors, drawn from current tenured or tenure-track faculty in the Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, and Medicine, will live in College residences near their house communities and maintain a strong, active presence in house life. With the support of Student Affairs staff and house student leadership, house professors will promote a broad range of opportunities for faculty, graduate and professional students, and undergraduate house members to build relationships and transform the residential experience.
House professors will serve four-year terms. During the 2015–2016 academic year, these professors will work with Student Affairs staff to select inaugural student leaders, develop house identities, and plan house programs. They will begin their on-campus residencies in the summer of 2016, in anticipation of house openings in September 2016. The house student advisory committee will include a broad range of undergraduate students and will meet for the remainder of this academic year to provide input on planning for house activities and programs. We particularly encourage applications from and nominations of current first-years and sophomores, who will have the opportunity to provide student leadership in the house communities that will begin in the fall of 2016. To apply or nominate a current student, please submit a brief statement of interest by Feb. 9 to the Dean of the College at email@example.com. Advisory committee members will be selected by Feb. 15 and will meet weekly for the remainder of the winter and spring terms. Planning will continue over the summer with sophomores in residence and with students selected for house leadership positions during the fall of 2016.
Students, faculty, and staff may also apply to serve on one of three ad hoc working groups that will make implementation recommendations, consistent with the framework that President Hanlon has established, in three key areas:
All three ad hoc committees will meet regularly beginning in mid-February and will submit their final proposals by the end of the 2015 spring term for fall 2015 implementation. Those interested in participating should submit a statement—explaining their interest and describing the strengths they would bring to a working group—by Feb. 9 to the Dean of the College at firstname.lastname@example.org.
