Provost Dever to return to academic life

October 10, 2017

To the Dartmouth community,

I write to let you know that in her fourth year as the College's chief academic and budget officer, Provost Carolyn Dever has decided to return to teaching and research at the conclusion of fall term on Nov. 22.

Provost Dever, who has accomplished much in her leadership position at Dartmouth, has decided that she will return to scholarly life and the vitality of the classroom. She is already at work preparing to teach a course called "Reading Jane Austen" in winter term.

I will announce an interim provost in the coming weeks, to be followed by a search for Dartmouth's next provost.

In her time as provost, Carolyn has had a major impact on Dartmouth, elevating the academic profile of the institution as she led an effort to improve campus diversity and inclusivity--particularly on behalf of the faculty; championing academic initiatives; and recruiting deans and other key leaders.

As Dartmouth's provost, she has played a lead role in the development of strategic priorities and specific initiatives for Dartmouth's future, chaired the budget committee, and assisted in building financial strength across the institution.

Please join me in thanking Carolyn Dever for her tremendous service to Dartmouth.

Sincerely,

Phil Hanlon '77
President
