Recent Events on Campus

May 30, 2017

Dear Students,

As you know, last week our community experienced three disturbing incidents on campus, including a burglary in our Kappa Delta Epsilon (KDE) sorority with an obscene message threatening sexual violence, followed by the theft of personal items from a laundry bag, and a targeted and worrisome email.

These events are unsettling to all of us and have raised questions about our safety. I want to reassure you that the safety and security of our community is our highest priority, and we're doing everything we can to safeguard our campus.

The Hanover Police Department is investigating all three incidents. They and Dartmouth Safety & Security have taken appropriate additional security measures to help keep you safe. Regular patrols have been increased, access codes have been changed on all sorority entrances, and card access to student residence halls has been limited to those officially assigned to those residences.

In addition to the support provided by Student Affairs, I personally met with the leaders of various student groups on Friday and Gail and I will be meeting with members of KDE later this afternoon to address any additional concerns they may have. As always, I will continue to make myself and my staff available to assist you however we can.

In the meantime, we are asking our entire community to be extra vigilant and aware of their surroundings, to look out for one another's safety, and to call Safety & Security for help (603-646-4000), if needed, whether in relation to concerns about security, physical safety, or heightened fear and anxiety. We'll continue to send updates on the investigation to keep you informed of its progress.

Sexual assault, gender-based harassment, interpersonal violence, and stalking have no place in our community. We each have a role to play in combatting these issues. My personal and our institutional commitment is strong and unwavering.

Sincerely,

Phil Hanlon
President
