DartAlert is part of a campus-wide communications plan that Dartmouth will be utilizing in the event of an emergency. The College has selected the services of an outside company, MIR3™, which has the capacity to deliver time-sensitive emergency notifications through a variety of communications devices, to the entire Dartmouth student, faculty and staff population in the event of an emergency that affects Dartmouth and Hanover areas.
In the event of an emergency affecting Dartmouth or the Upper Valley, all Dartmouth-administered, land-line telephones will receive an automated message, and all Dartmouth email accounts will receive an email with brief details and instructions regarding the emergency event.
Additionally, the DartAlert notification system now also enables members of the Dartmouth College community to receive either an automated cellphone warning or text message if an emergency occurs on campus. Click here for details.
DartAlert will issue emergency messages in two ways:
You’ll receive emergency messages over your Dartmouth-administered land-line telephone (those with 603-646-xxxx numbers, as well as some Dartmouth Medical School land-lines starting with 603-650-xxxx) and through your Dartmouth-hosted email account (those in the dartmouth.edu domain.)
The DartAlert notification system now also enables members of the Dartmouth College community to receive either an automated cellphone warning or text message if an emergency occurs on campus. This optional notification is in addition to the automated message Dartmouth-administered land-line telephones and all Dartmouth email accounts, which will receive details and instructions regarding an emergency event. Click here to register your cell phone for DartAlert notifications. Note that participation in this phase of the DartAlert Emergency Notification system is voluntary.
Dartmouth College Administered Phones are those phones that typically begin with the exchange 646; also included in this suite of phones are those of DMS (Dartmouth Medical School) staff, faculty and students on campus that begin with 650.
DartAlert is an additional tool for notifying students, faculty, and staff in an emergency, working in conjunction with our already well-established emergency communication methods, which include the Dartmouth home page, Dartmouth Daily Updates (D2U), and campus-wide broadcast emails.
Dartmouth departments are working with managers and supervisors to ensure that those managers notify their staff – those who don't have their own work stations, computers or work phones – through direct personal contact. Two-way radios already in use in some departments, as well as other direct communication methods, are being considered to ensure that all employees receive emergency information.
Yes.
Dartmouth conducted a test of the first phase of the DartAlert system on Nov. 12, and we're pleased with the test results. More than 6,700 telephones were called and 15,000 emails delivered; the very constructive feedback we've received indicates that there were some minor problems that have been addressed or will be addressed soon, but on the whole the system performed very well.
Dartmouth is in phase 2 of the DartAlert implementation, and additional testing will be undertaken. Watch this web site for information on new developments and future testing of the system.
Of course, in the event that an actual emergency were to occur during any DartAlert test, or thereafter, the College would send other messages accordingly, which would inform you on what actions you can take to protect yourself.
