Curriculum

Overview
In LSA+ Brazil, language acquisition and cultural experience develop through living with a Brazilian family, studying language, literature and civilization, as well as excursions, including a special week of outings and classes on the southern coast of Bahia, a seminal historic region of remarkable natural beauty. Our base in Salvador is the ACBEU ("Brazil-U.S. Cultural Association"), a highly respected language school and cultural institution, located in the Corredor da Vitória, a stately avenue of nineteenth century mansions and home to a cluster of museums.

 FSP Curriculum

 Special weeks:

  • Week 7.Down the Coast”. Special week of classes, on the “Cocoa Coast” in southern Bahia, through the Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz. Students spend this week in and around the town of Ilhéus (made famous by Jorge Amado’s novel, Gabriela and other works). Apart from the chocolate, the region is also important for rare preserves of virgin Atlantic rain-forest. Classes cover regional literature, history and agriculture, as well as marine and land ecosystems and biosphere.

  • Week 8. Holiday Travel. No classes are held during this week so that students may travel to other parts of Brazil -the Amazon, Rio de Janeiro, the unbelievably big Foz de Iguaçu Waterfalls, etc.

Afro-Bahian physical and musical education (optional)

  • Dartmouth and ACBEU will advise and facilitate students interested in afternoon classes in capoeira (Afro-Brazilian martial arts dance), Afro-Brazilian percussion and süingue baiano ("Bahian swing" - popular dance).  Classes can be taken privately, in a small group or through a community organization which primarily serves local people.
