Research Interests

Fluid and magnetofluid turbulence, statistical mechanics of turbulent continua, magnetohydrodynamic confinement and stability of fusion plamsas, nonlinear computation of fluid and magnetofluid effects, inertial confinement fusion, plasma kinetic theory, solar wind phenomena
My colleagues and I have in recent years been concerned with trying to understand the quantitative behavior of fluids, particularly electrically conducting fluids in the presence of dc magnetic fields and applied electric fields. Numerical computation of nonlinear behavior out of the range of linear analytical mathematics has been used to try to confirm statistical theories of turbulent relaxation to spatially non-uniform states. Two-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional phenomena in magnetohydrodyanmics and fluid mechanics have been of interest. (Rotating neutral fluids are of particularly recent interest.) It has been attempted to bring classical perspectives from Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics to bear on electrically conducting fluids and plasmas.
