April 4-5, 2009 Thomas Pogge, the Leitner Professor of Philosophy and International Affairs at
Yale, is one of the world's most influential writers and activists
concerning the issues of international justice and global poverty. Professor
Pogge, is the thirty-fifth prestigious philosopher to give a Gramlich lecture at
Dartmouth, which will be given at 4 pm, April 3, in 41 Haldeman.

The title of his lecture is "Unjust Social Rules: Killing and Causing Pain"

"As citizens of wealthy countries, we are familiar with the claim that it
lies in our hands to save the lives of poor people abroad or, by doing
nothing, to let these people die. Even more uncomfortable is the thought
that we may be actively contributing to the persistence of severe
suffering and premature deaths. We might be doing so through our
participation in the design and imposition of supranational
institutional arrangements that foreseeably and avoidably aggravate
life-threatening poverty abroad. The lecture explores to what extent
this is so."

The Gramlich Lecture will launch the weekend's events, including the "Bernard
Gert, Morality, and Bioethics Conference at Dartmouth College" A tribute to Prof
Bernard Gert, who is retiring June 2009 after 50 years of service.
