Design Concept

Phantom Limb: If rigged in a specific way we could have the upstage "ribs" fall in a kind of domino style to hit the deck behind them causing (hopefully) a loud noise, as if a round of gunshots. Shackelton's men often described the cracking of the ice around the ship in this way.

We see the ship and the icebergs as archeological relics. We are interested in exposing the bones and structure of these set pieces. This brought us to the structure of the skeleton of the whale which as you can see bears striking resemblance to that of the ribs of a ship framing.

Ship inspiration, design, and construction

Selin Maner collaborated in early studies for the ship collapse as well as Rebecca Yurek on more recent incarnations. Engineers at the Grand Theatre Groningen helped to make the mechanism come to life.
