Although elective space is limited at the Dartmouth Medical School/
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, students who are enrolled at other medical schools can participate in pediatric electives if space is available and if the criteria outlined below are met. Basic core clerkships are not available to visiting medical students. First contact Holly Harrison, Pediatric Clerkship Coordinator, to find out if there is an opening in the pediatrics course you wish to take.

Before your application to take an elective will be considered, you must meet these critieria:

  • Be enrolled in a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Be fully matriculated and in good standing as verified by your medical school's Dean's Office.
  • Have successfully completed all prerequisite clinical core clerkships.
  • Be covered by personal health and liability insurance.
  • Submit written proof of immunizations (using the Dartmouth College Immunization and TB Record), including Hepatitis B immunization (or signed waiver declining the immunization).
  • Submit written proof that you have completed training in OSHA's Universal Precautions within 12 months of the start date of the desired elective.

How to Apply:

  • Write to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs or call the Student Affairs Office (603-650-1509) to request an application. Dartmouth Medical School charges a $35 application processing fee for each elective for which you apply. The fee must accompany the application, and is refundable only if the desired elective is not available. All checks must be in U.S. currency, drawn on a U.S. bank, and made payable to Dartmouth Medical School. We recommend you contact the Student Affairs Office for application deadlines.
  • It is your responsibility to make sure that all appropriate documentation and evaluation forms required for your home institution are received by the Office of Student Affairs for destribution to the appropriate faculty sponsor four weeks before the start date of the elective.
  • Note: There is no tuition charged to visiting medical students. No uniforms are provided. Students are expected to make their own arrangements for housing and meals.

Registration Process
Visiting students must report to the Office of Student Affairs, Room 302 in the Remsen Building, Dartmouth Medical School, on the first day of the elective for registration. Registration includes: official registration, renting a pager, and obtaining a temporary library card, gym facilities pass, etc. Positive identification, such as a student ID card or driver's license, must be presented at the time of registration.

Cancellation of an Elective
Canceling an elective is strongly discouraged. If, for any reason, you are not able to participate in the scheduled elective, you must send written notification to the Office of Student Affairs no later than four weeks before the start date of the scheduled elective.
