If you are an international student and wish to sign up for a subinternship or elective in Pediatrics, first contact Holly Harrison, Pediatric Clerkship Coordinator, to find out if the elective has an opening. If there is an opening and you meet the appropriate criteria, she will mail you information and forms that you must complete and return. Below are the instructions that accompany the forms:

  • Submit the completed application and the $100 administrative filing fee as soon as possible, but no later than 10 weeks before the start date of the elective. The check must be drawn on a U.S. bank and be made payable to “Dartmouth College.” Payments must be made in U.S. currency.
  • Complete the Form IAP-66 and Proof of Financial Support Form immediately. Once these forms are approved, Dartmouth Medical School will send you the appropriate visiting student immigration papers. Take these to a U.S. consul (and do what?) Anyone arriving without the appropriate immigration documents will not be allowed to register.
  • Proof of financial support: If you designate personal funds as your primary source of support, you must provide a bank statement, converted to U.S. dollars, along with your elective application showing evidence of having $1,050 for every month you study at Dartmouth Medical School.
  • The dean of your medical school or his official designee must certify your registration in good standing, your completion of prerequisite clinical clerkships, your proof of immunizations, and your provision for liability and health insurance.
  • It is your responsibility to assure that all appropriate documentation and evaluation forms required for your home institution arrive at DMS at least two weeks before you complete the elective.
  • Arranging housing while at Dartmouth Medical School is your responsibility. Rental costs range from $300 to $400 a month. As a courtesy, we can assist you in locating local housing. Please feel free to contact our Student Affairs Office (603-650-1509) to obtain a list of preferred landlords.
  • We require written verification that you have received the annual Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training in Universal Precautions before you begin the elective. This training is held every Monday morning, and you must sign in to attend.

Registration Procedures
Visiting students must report to the Office of Student Affairs, Room 302 in the Remsen Building, Dartmouth Medical School, on the first day of the elective for registration. Registration includes: official registration with the Medical School Registrar, renting a pager, and obtaining a temporary library card, gym facilities pass, etc. Positive identification, such as a student ID card or driver's license, must be presented at the time of registration. All international visiting students must bring their passports and immigration documents to registration.

Cancellation of Elective
Canceling an elective is strongly discouraged. If, for any reason, you are not able to take the scheduled elective, you must send written notification to the sponsoring department no later than four weeks before the start date of the elective.
