This four-week elective is directed toward students interested in making Pediatrics or Cardiology their specialty. It is open to one student, who will see neonate to adult patients with congenital structural and acquired functional heart disease and arrhythmias. With pediatric cardiologists, the student will review pertinent history, physical-examination findings and diagnostic studies including ECGs, chest X-rays and echocardiograms. The student will attend diagnostic and invasive therapeutic cardiac catheterizations.

Disease management and outcomes of natural and unnatural history will be discussed. The patients will include inpatients and outpatients here at DHMC and at some of the outreach clinics throughout the state.

Credit units: 4

Goals and objectives: To provide the student with the skills to evaluate the patient with possible congential or acquired heart disease, formulate a differential diagnosis and initial treatment plans, and know possible outcomes.

Method of instruction:

  • Primarily patient-oriented
  • Review of chest X-rays, ECGs, echocardiograms, catheterization data and cineangiograms
  • Read small textbook (Park)

Method of student evaluation: Evaluation of knowledge gained by observation and review of materials.

Special note: This is a space-available elective shared with DHMC pediatric housestaff and adult cardiology fellows. It is primarily for students interested in a career in Pediatrics, Adult Cardiology or Cardiovascular Surgery.
