In this four-week elective, the student functions as a pediatric PL-1. In most weeks, the student is assigned in lieu of one of the pediatric interns. The course emphasizes increasing expertise in history-taking, physical examinations, patient management and procedures. The student is responsible for writing up and managing all assigned patients under the supervision of the ward resident and attendings. Open to one student.

When offered: Throughout the year

Credit units: 4

Goals and objectives:

  • To increase the student's knowledge of pediatric illnesses and their management
  • To expand the student's skills in communicating with children, parents and staff
  • To improve the student's management of patient care
  • To allow the student the experience of working in a busy clinical service
  • To encourage better organization and efficiency as needed when working as a house officer

Method of instruction: The student participates in the resident teaching program, including department conferences. There is individual case-related teaching from the ward resident and attendings.

Method of student evaluation: Evaluation takes place at the end of two weeks, and again upon completion of the elective. Final evaluation is made by residents and attendings together; they evaluate the student's clinical skills, academic performance and attitudes.
