In this 2- or 4-week elective, the student is part of the PICU team, being responsible for the care of specific patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This course gives the student a broad insight into the care of very ill children. The student is assigned patients in the same fashion as other house officers and is responsible for presenting on rounds, writing progress notes and keeping current on laboratory data. In addition, the student is expected to do readings related to the patients' diagnoses and treatments. Open to one student.

Credit units: 2 or 4

Goals and objectives:

  • Gain pediatric clinical experience in an acute setting.
  • Become familiar with procedures and techniques used in this setting.
  • Become familiar with some of the illnesses that are common to this setting.

Method of instruction: The student (subintern) is expected to do the following:

  • Attend all morning rounds prepared to discuss patients.
  • Attend and participate in all conferences and educational activities as offered.
  • Prepare and present at weekly critical care rounds, including providing pertinent handouts, etc., for the presentations.
  • Take call approximately every third night.
  • Accompany patients to operative and radiological procedures and report findings.
  • Go on pediatric transports in the company of the PICU transport physician.

Method of student evaluation: The student is evaluated by Dr. Levin and the PICU team. The evaluation covers clinical demonstration of expanded knowledge, degree of participation in rounds and conferences, and the quality of weekly presentations.
