In this two- or four-week elective, the student sees pediatric patients with gastrointestinal symptoms in the inpatient, outpatient and Intensive Care Nursery settings. The elective is open to one student.

When offered: Variable; contact Susan Edwards.

Credit units: 2 or 4

Goals and objectives: Increase knowledge and diagnostic skills in pediatric GI.

Method of instruction:

  • See outpatients (an average of 5 new evaluations and 4 follow-up patients a week).
  • Perform consults 3-4 times a week on the inpatient ward and in the Intensive Care Nursery.
  • Attend procedures 1-2 times a week.
  • Complete a formal independent reading project with presentation.
  • Complete assigned readings and cases.

Method of student evaluation: Direct patient interaction and observation. One-on-one with the instructor most of the time.
