| Pediatrics 410: Subintern - Intensive Care Nursery | ||||||

Faculty: William Edwards, M.D., Judith Frank, M.D., George Little, M.D., Torrun Rhodes, M.D., Robert Darnall, M.D. E-mail: William.H.Edwards@Dartmouth.EDU In this four-week elective, the student is a primary member of the care team for a number of Intensive Care Nursery patients. Open to one student. When offered: Throughout the year Credit units: 4 Goals and objectives: The goals for the student are to learn how to approach clinical problems common to neonates and to complete physical assessments, differential diagnoses, problem lists and management plans for the patients. The student is expected to play a major role in communicating with the parents of these critically ill infants. As dictated by the clinical situation, the student performs procedures, including umbilical artery catheterization, endotrachel intubation, arterial sampling and intravenous cannulation. The student is expected to be on call every third to fourth night. Method of instruction: The major format is teaching rounds by the ICN attending. Individual supervision of cases and procedures are by the nursery senior resident. Suggested readings covering basic problems in neonatology are available. Method of student evaluation: Evaluation is by the ICN attending and senior resident, with input from the nursing leadership of the ICN. Evaluation is based on the performance of the above goals.
