Open to one student at a time, this two-week elective exposes the student to the multidisciplinary evaluation of children with disabilities and the issues faced by their families. It also introduces the community systems of supports and service to such children and their families.

When offered: Throughout the year except July and August

Credit units: 2

Goals and objectives:

  • Familiarize students with a family-centered approach to care of children with special needs.
  • Provide basic knowledge of common developmental disabilities.
  • Provide awareness of appropriate non-stigmatizing interventions for disabilities in early childhood.
  • Provide increased knowledge of and experience with normal developmental behavior of young children (ages 0-5).

Method of instruction: Through observation and participation in clinical activities of the Dartmouth Center for Genetics and Child Development.

Method of student evaluation: Based on regular participation in scheduled activities, thoughtfulness of questions and discussion.

Special note: This can be a four-week elective with prior approval from Dr. Little. If you choose a four-week elective, you must complete a short paper, presentation or project.
