| Pediatrics 503: Clinical Genetics and Metabolism | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

John Moeschler. M.D., and James Filiano, M.D. Open to one student, this clinical and research elective lasts 4-8 weeks and focuses on the areas of clinical genetics, metabolic disorders, dysmorphology, birth defects, genetically determined developmental disabilities and developmental problems of infancy and childhood. This elective provides the student with experience and knowledge in assessing children and adults with a variety of genetic disorders or congential malformations. The student learns basic pathogenic mechanisms, diagnosis and management. The student is expected to research a problem or topic in depth and prepare a verbal and written presentation. Method of instruction: All students meet with Dr. Moeschler and Dr. Filiano to set specific learning objectives and arrange a schedule for the month. The student also chooses a topic of interest to present during the final week of the elective. Method of student evaluation: This is by faculty review of clinical performance and by quality of of the presentation. Special note: Students are not expected to participate in all possible clinical activities. They should decide the areas they want to emphasize and discuss this with the faculty. |
