Open to two students, this elective lasts two or four weeks and includes clinic care and readings focusing on the comprehensive issues facing children with long-term illnesses and handicaps. If taken as a four-week course, students have the opportunity to do research in chronic illness and how children with chronic illness cope with stress. If taken in July and August, students also can participate in chronic illness care at special summer camps.

Credit units: 2 or 4

Goals and Objectives:

  • Read and discuss selected issues universal to all chronic illnesses.
  • Participate in an evening of "hands on" respite care for a local sick or handicapped child and his family.
  • Have the opportunity to participate in ongoing research about chronic illness and how much control children feel, and how children with chronic illness cope with stress.
  • Participate in a variety of chronic-illness clinics to learn the unifying principles in care and important medical issues.

Method of instruction: Individualized clinic schedule with readings.
