The progress of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an emerging modality for cancer treatment has been given a boost in awareness by the charity Killing Cancer, in the United Kingdom. The following link from SKY news reports on Killing Cancer's effort to bolster support from some of the UK's leading celebrities to raise awareness and to raise 50 million pounds for the building of cancer centers to increase the clinical trials of PDT.
Dr. Stephen Periera, principal investigator of Project 2 on the Hasan Program Project is at the forefront of phase I clinical trials of PDT for the treatment of pancreatic cancer as well as phase III clinical trials of PDT for the treatment of biliary tract cancer at the University College Hospital in London. The Hasan Program Project aims to develop PDT therapies for pancreatic cancer which currently has a less than 3% survival rate. Dr.Pereira stated that "We all feel that it is urgent- patients, public and doctors alike- to really try to bring in new treatments which are going to have effects on this disease".
PDT is already approved for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration and lung cancer in the United States.
