Yield: 4-6 servings
| 10 slices | day-old French bread (3/4 inch thick) |
| 6 | eggs, lightly beaten |
| 2-3/4 c | milk |
| 2/3 c | sugar, divided |
| 1 T | vanilla extract |
| 4 medium or 3 large | tart apples, peeled, thinly sliced, and cut into bite-size pieces (Granny Smiths are good) |
| 2 t | ground cinnamon |
| 1/2 t | ground nutmeg |
- Place bread in a greased 13x9 baking dish in a single layer.
- Combine cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/3 c. sugar.
- Combine eggs, milk, 1/3 c. sugar, and vanilla. Pour half over bread.
- Top with half the apples. Sprinkle apples with half the cinnamon mixture.
- Top with remaining apples. Pour remaining egg mixture over apples and sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture.
- Cover and chill 8 hours or overnight.
- Remove from refrigerator 1/2 hour before baking. Preheat oven to 350.
- Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
