Math and Computer Science double major
F08-S09 D-plan: R-R-R
Favorite and least favorite thing about department:
My favorite thing about the math and computer science departments is how willing students are to help each other. Professors usually encourage students to work on problems sets in a group. Because of this, I can learn from other students in addition to my professor.
My least favorite thing about the math department is how people think that all you can do with a math major is be a math teacher. This is definitely not true!
My least favorite thing about the computer science department is the amount of time that it forces me to spend cooped up in the lab.
Important info for potential majors: For math majors, don’t think that the prerequisite calculus classes are characteristic of all math classes. Most classes have little to do with calculus. There are a wide variety of different math classes available, so don’t be afraid to try something new. For computer science majors, be prepared to take some very time consuming courses. When you take these hard classes, keep in mind how rewarding all of the hard work will be in the end.
Talk to me if: you’re interested in Spanish Literature and want to know what you can do with it during and after Dartmouth.
Most valuable academic information learned: Office hours are your friend. Professors are more than happy to meet with you, and getting some one on one time with them can be extremely helpful.
Favorite class and professor: Math 46 “Intro to Applied Math” with Alex Barnett. It was very challenging, so I learned soooo much. Barnett is the best. He knew his class was tough, so he put in the extra time to help his students during office hours.
Major classes taken: MATH 11, 20, 22, 23, 31, 35, 46, 76; CS 18, 19, 23, 25, 37, 39, 53, 58, 78
Major journey: I loved math all through High School and knew that I wanted to major in it at Dartmouth. At first, I only planned on minoring in computer science. After freshman year, however, I found all of the computer science class so interesting that I decided to go for the major.
