Winnifred Lewis ’09
Comparative Literature Major, Art History Minor
F08-S09 D-plan: R-R-R

Favorite and least favorite thing about department: The comparative literature department is wonderful because of its interdisciplinary nature and the flexibility it provides, and I've loved every class I've taken. I'm terrified of writing a thesis though.

Important info for potential majors: Find a professor that you connect with who can help you find your focus. Because the major is so open-ended, it can be easy to get lost. The comparative literature department is a combination of professors from many different departments, so they can generally help you figure out not only the comparative literature courses you should take but also the ones in other disciplines.

Talk to me if: Talk to me if you are interested in using option C of this major (a foreign literature and another discipline), French Literature and Art History in particular.

Most valuable academic information learned: Read the ORC. It actually, and unsurprisingly, does contains a lot of useful information.

Favorite class and professor: Comparative literature 70 - European Jewish Intellectuals taught by Lawrence Kritzman. I have never felt so unprepared for a class before or so in over my head, but I was fascinated by the course material and impressed by Professor Kritzman, and it ended up being very rewarding. His teaching style facilitates great discussions, and he is very committed to his students. I would recommend taking as many classes with him as possible.

Major classes taken: COLT 10, 35, 66, 70, and another 70; FREN 8, 10, 25, 29, 30, 31, and 55; ARTH 1, 2, 16, 53, 55, and 65.

Major journey: I came to Dartmouth undecided, and Professor Kritzman just happened to be my first year advisor. I'm not usually superstitious, but I think it was a sign. I was immediately impressed with his dedication to his students as well as his intellectual prowess. I took a class with him, and it was an easy decision.

Thesis Status: A planned thesis on Proust.

Off Campus Program: French FSP in Paris, 08W.

Other activities: Dartmouth Women’s Club Lacrosse; Kappa Kappa Gamma
