Favorite and least favorite thing about department: My favorite part of the department is the faculty. They are extraordinarily approachable, and they are eager to help students. For example: I wanted to do a Presidential Scholarship in Art History, but no professor had submitted a project. However, as they are approachable, I went from professor to professor until I found one with a similar schedule to mine who was willing to be my research advisor.
Important info for potential majors: The best way to make the major easy is to meet the faculty early so you can figure out who you want to do research and take classes with. Also, work on getting your required classes out of the way as early as possible.
Talk to me if: Talk to me if you are interested in doing Art History research, have questions about the Art History FSP, or need help memorizing the slides.
Most valuable academic information learned: The most valuable academic information I've learned is if something is not listed, it does not mean that it is impossible. If the Art History department isn't offering a class that you're interested in, then you can do an independent study. Also, take classes with professors that you like. If you like the professor, they will make the information interesting. However, if you have a professor you can't stand, they will take interesting material and make it dull.
Favorite class and professor: My favorite class was Art History 82 “Renaissance Chapels” with Professor Randolph. This was a ten people discussion based class. There were no tests (so no slides!), and we spent enough time on each chapel so that it didn't feel rushed. It was a nice change to do in depth research on one or two subjects rather than skimming over a large number of art works.
Major classes taken: Art History: 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 22, 42, 82; SART 15.
Major journey: During my First Year, I took two Art History classes and two Chemistry classes. I liked them both equally and knew that I wanted major in one or the other. I knew that I was probably going to pursue medicine after college, so I decided to do an Art History major because I knew I would never have this opportunity again.
Major specific activities: Presidential Scholarship with Professor Rosenthal.
Thesis Status:I am deciding right now whether I will do one or not.
Off Campus Program: Art History FSP in Rome, 07S.
Other activities: UGA; Dartmouth Cycling Team; DAPA Intern; DCARE; Koop Scholar Intern.

Art History Major/Economics Minor
F08-S09 D-plan: R-R-R
Favorite and least favorite thing about department: The Art History department is extremely welcoming and friendly. I love how enthusiastic the professors are about class and art in general. The department supports student's interests in art and takes every initiative in helping you pursue them. The professors bring the material to life and keep you interested. They are experts in the field and love their jobs, making it extremely enjoyable to have them as professors.
Talk to me if: Talk to me if you are interested in the Art History FSP or want to know more about what you can do with the Hood Museum of Art.
Most valuable academic information learned: Really take advantage of the relationships you build with professors. They are an amazing resource and are incredibly encouraging and helpful people.
Favorite class and professor: Professor Coffey is an exceptional professor who teaches you not only how the analyze art but also how to write well. I loved her class and found her to be a great professor to talk to, in and out of class about art and art history. She really gets you interested in the material and makes you feel confident in your argument as a writer and in class discussion.
Major classes taken: Arth 1, 2, 10, 11, 16, 16.2, 20, 32, 45, 70.
Major journey: I always had an interest in art that started from visiting museums and galleries during family vacations. Freshman Fall I took Art History 1 and fell in love with the class. The teaching style, the material and the class discussions were wonderful and from there I kept taking classes, finally making it my major.

Virginia Deaton ’09
Art History, coursework in Classical Studies and American Studies
F08-S09 D-plan: R-R-R
Favorite and least favorite thing about department: I love the small class size of the department, and the availability of the professors. Because the department is relatively small, meetings with professors are easy to set up, and the professors are willing to take time out of their schedules to talk about major planning, internships, career and graduate school options etc. One of my favorite things about the department is running into my professors outside of class. Last fall, one of my favorite professors even came to a sports event I was hosting, and stayed afterward to congratulate me! Likewise, some of my former professors send out personal invitations to art related events in the area. The only bad thing about this major is that most art history students are girls, which sometimes gives class discussions a gender bias.
Talk to me if: Talk to me if you're interested in classical Greek and Roman art. I haven't disliked any art history class at Dartmouth, but my favorites have focused on Greek art!
Most valuable academic information learned: By carefully analyzing images, I have learned attention to detail, and have gained an increased interest in finding the right words to describe what I see. Also, learning to discern personal biases and aesthetic appeal from accurate analysis of works is an ongoing research challenge.
Favorite class and professor: Art History 70, Mary Coffey: This class focused on North American art, 1600-1900A.D., with an interest in social and racial biases as presented or not presented in art. This class was writing based, and each paper had the option of a rewrite. Coffey is an extremely articulate professor, who clearly presents her ideas. She is equally good at sifting through first drafts of papers, to help the students articulately present their ideas.
Major classes taken: ARTH: 1, 2, 20, 22, 70, FSP16 European art and Colonialism; 82 Renaissance Chapels; Special Topic: Romanticism in Art
Major journey: Growing up, my grandmother and mother dragged me to every museum on the east coast. I was home-schooled until high school, and my mother chose a curriculum for me that focused on art, classics, literature and history. Therefore, when I came to Dartmouth, I already had a strong background in art. I took Art I freshman fall, loved the material, the professor, and the style of teaching, and decided to keep taking classes, and to make art history my major.
Major specific activities: Collegiate Journal of Art: Copyright and Permissions co-editor Fall 2008: TA in art history 1 Fall, Winter, Spring 2007-8: Hood Museum Senior Intern: planned my own Space for Dialogue exhibition focusing on consumer driven art of the post-Civil War Reconstruction; also worked with the curator of American Art on her upcoming exhibition on the California Watercolor style of the 1930's and ‘40's.
Thesis Status:Planned thesis with advisor Ada Cohen (Ancient art professor) on the development of Polyphemus the Cyclops (featured in the Odyssey) in Greek and Roman art
Other activities: Delta Delta Delta; Dartmouth Polocrosse club (co-founder); Dartmouth College Childcare Center classroom helper, Dartmouth Equestrian Team
Off Campus Program: Art History FSP S07
Molly Holden ’09
Art History and English
F08-S09 D-plan: X-R-X
Favorite and least favorite thing about department: Because they all teach in the areas of their specialization, the art history professors are all very enthusiastic about their subject matter, and so I've always found the lectures to be very fascinating and engaging. All of the professors I've had class with have been very accessible and extremely helpful in recommending research resources. One thing that I wish was different about the major is that there were more seminar or discussion-based classes so that students could discuss their own interpretations of the works as well as learning the current significance of them in a lecture setting.
Important info for potential majors: The art history major requires A LOT of memorization. The best tactic is to begin studying slides early, though this is easy to put off until the last minute.
Talk to me if: You need help on planning an art history paper as I am also an RWIT tutor and simply love writing art history papers.
Most valuable academic information learned: The most valuable thing I've learned is the process of studying and analyzing visual media. Much of the significance behind works of art is historically or culturally based, and without this background knowledge or eye for symbolism and allusion, this meaning can be lost.
Favorite class and professor:Japanese Prints with Allen Hockley
Major classes taken:ARTH 1, 2, 46, 53, and 65.
Major journey: I took my first art history class fall of freshmen year. My high school didn't have an art history department, so this was my first experience in the subject, and I was immediately drawn in to the process of study art and what it says about the development of human culture. I just kept being drawn to classes offered each term and before long realized that this was what I wanted to study.
Thesis Status:Undecided
Other activities:Club Tennis; RWIT; Alpha Xi Delta—Alumni Relations Chair 08S and Historian 08X
Off Campus Program: English FSP in Glasgow 08F and Art History FSP in Rome 09S
Internship experience: Internship with Anthem Press, 08W, London-My experience with Anthem Press was amazing, especially just getting the chance to live completely on my own in a city like London. I worked on all aspects of publishing, from gathering publicity contacts to copy editing to assisting with cover design. I really enjoyed how versatile the experience was and how it could apply to other fields, should my interests change.
