J-1 Transfers

J-1 Students and Scholars

Transfers In to Dartmouth College

If you have been hired by, or accepted into an academic program at Dartmouth College, and are currently attending or working at another US institution, we must effect an official State Department transfer of your J-1 program to Dartmouth. This is a completely separate procedure from the academic transfer you must also go through. Please make it very clear to your Dartmouth admissions counselor that you are on an J-1 program at another US school, and need to transfer your J-1 program to Dartmouth.  Please also make sure you inform your current immigration advisor at your school that you wish them to release your SEVIS record to Dartmouth College.

When we receive notification of your admittance to Dartmouth from the appropriate college admissions office or from your department, we will ask you to complete an online information form before we can issue and mail to you a DS-2019 form.  contact your Dartmouth immigration advisor to access this online form.  This form will ask you detailed questions about your current school and J-1 program. Once you submit this online form to us, and your current school has transferred your SEVIS record to us, we will be able to issue you a Dartmouth College DS-2019 form.  When you arrive on campus, you must come to the Office of Visa and Immigration Services with your new Dartmouth DS-2019 and your passport to officially "check-in" with us, per Immigration and State Department regulations.

If you will be traveling outside the U.S. before you come to Dartmouth, please let us know, as you may need to apply for a new J-1 visa before re-entering the U.S., and you will need our DS-2019 form to do this.

Transfers Out from Dartmouth College

Your new school will require certain information form you, before they can issue you a DS-2019 form.  You must also inform us of your intention ot transfer, and you will need to complete a "transfer out" form.  Contact your Dartmouth immigration advisor to get this form. Once we have that form, we can release your SEVIS record to your new school.  Please make sure that if transferring, you follow all proper procedures

Note that J-1 exchange visitors must transfer within the same category of sponsorship, and must maintain the same objective.  For information on the different categories of J sponsorship, please click here: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ovis/updates/j1/categories.html
