Information for Dartmouth Offices and Departments

Many programs and schools at Dartmouth have established procedures, with the help of the Office of Visa and Immigration Services, for bringing internationals to campus. Please click here for a complete overview of Office of Visa and Immigration Services procedures for the admission, invitation, or hiring of non-U.S. citizens at Dartmouth.  Please click here for a summary of possible visa types and immigration options. If you are unaware of any established procedures and are interested in admitting an international student or employing an international researcher or professor within your department or school, please direct your message to the appropriate advisor at Visa.and.Immigration.Services@Dartmouth.edu for information concerning visa options and institutional responsibilities. To determine the appropriate advisor for your department or school please review our Immigration Advisor Caseload Division in PDF format. If you are employing a non-U.S. citizen, there are also important I-9 compliance issues to be aware of. Please review our summary of Employment Authorization Documentation Needed for Non-U.S. Citizens for more information.

E-Verify Update

As of November 1st, Dartmouth College is a participating E-Verify Employer.  this means that we are able to sponsor certin individuals for an extension of their work authorization.  Please contact OVIs for more information.  Please also see the College's website regarding E-Verify information:

I-20 Form Information and Request (for graduate students)

I-20 Form Information and Request (for graduate students)

Admitting Graduate Departments and Schools will need to complete and submit the Department Student Visa Sponsorship Request Form, online.  Once this is submitted, the international student will receive an auto-email (to the email address entered on the form by the Department) with a link to the International Graduate Student Intake Form

In addition to this online **International Graduate Student Intake form** which must be completed by each international student admitted to a Dartmouth academic program, the student will need to scan and upload evidence of admission to Dartmouth College, and evidence of funding (personal and / or institutional) equal to tuition, fees, living expenses, and miscellaneous expenses.  The student will use the I-20 form that the immigration advisor issues to apply for an F-1 visa at the nearest U.S. consulate in his/her home country. If the student is presently in the US, at another institution, or in a different visa status, we can transfer the student's immigration status without having to make them depart the U.S.

F-1 General Information

DS-2019 Form Information and Request (exchange students, research scholars, and temporary visiting faculty)

We will need two online forms completed forms:

Department Information form: https://fs8.formsite.com/Rcatmur/form308636270/secure_index.html

Employee / Scholar Information form: https://fs8.formsite.com/Rcatmur/form263240856/secure_index.html

The sponsoring department should complete the department form, and the international should complete the employee / scholar form.   If the international is funded by a source other than Dartmouth College (personal, home institution, U.S. government agency, international organization, home country agency, or government), then your student or scholar will need to scan and upload a letter from the funding agency verifying the amount of the support.

Please note that citizens of certain countries, or those who show government funding, may be found subject to a two-year home residency requirement at the completion of their exchange program. The student, scholar, or faculty member will use the DS-2019 form to apply for a J-1 exchange visitor visa at the nearest U.S. consulate in their home country. If the student or scholar is presently in the US, at another institution, or in a different visa status, please contact our office for information on how to proceed.

H-1B Petition (work visa sponsorship for faculty and longer-term researchers)

An H-1B petition is an application by the College to the CIS for permission to employ an international temporarily (for up to six years). To file an H-1B petition, we will need several forms, beginning with the following two online forms:

Department Information form: https://fs8.formsite.com/Rcatmur/form308636270/secure_index.html

Employee / Scholar Information form: https://fs8.formsite.com/Rcatmur/form263240856/secure_index.html

The sponsoring department should complete the department form, and the international employeeshould complete the employee / scholar form.

In addition, we will need a Department of Labor form and letters of support.  Your immigration advisor will send you details after the process has begun.  The filing fee checks to cover the required government filing fees can total either $320.00, $820.00, or $1,820.00, depending on the type of case needed.  These fees are payable by the hiring department, not the employee.

Please note that the H-1B petition can take up to a month or two to prepare, and an additional three months for the CIS to adjudicate. If you need the petition adjudicated more quickly, the CIS does allow for "premium processing".  Please contact our office directly if you wish to pursue premium processing. We have included a link to a general information sheet on H-1B petitions below as well, but feel free to call or email us if you have questions.
