Social Security Number Letter Request

If you are an F-1 student and need a letter for your Social Security number application, click here.  Do not use the request on this page.

Nonimmigrants who wish to apply for a social security number should click on our social security card information page in the Visa & Immigration Info section of our website to get a list of required documents. The U.S. government requires the institutions sponsoring international students and scholars to write a letter in support of their social security card applications. This letter verifies that the student or scholar is residing in the U.S., is in a non-immigrant category that is eligible for some sort of work authorization, and is in good academic or non-immigrant standing.

Please log into iDartmouth with your netID from OVIS website and submit E-form "Social Security Number (SSN) Letter Request" from "General Requests" category. If you are an F-1 student, please find the information here (do not submit this e-form). You will receive an email when your letter is ready for pickup at the Office of Visa and Immigration Services, usually within two to three business days.

Please call us at 603 646-3474, or e-mail us at Visa.and.Immigration.Services@Dartmouth.edu, if you have any questions.
