While not required by the Department of State, international students and scholars sometimes wish to send a letter from the Office of Visa and Immigration Services (OVIS) to a family member who is applying for a visitor visa to come to the United States for a short time. Upon request, OVIS will provide a letter verifying the student or scholar's good academic or nonimmigrant standing only. If you would like to provide a more detailed letter for your family member, or for a non-relative, you may choose to do so yourself. We have provided a sample template letter that you are welcome to use. It is important to note that there is no guarantee your family member will be granted a visitor visa. The success of the visa application is dependent on the family member's ability to demonstrate to the U.S. Consulate or Embassy a residence in the home country, strong ties to the home country and an intention to return after the temporary stay in the United States.
If you are an international student or scholar at Dartmouth College and wish to have a letter from our office verifying you are inviting a family member to visit you here in the United States, please fill out this form, and click "Submit" at the bottom. We will email you when your letter is ready, usually within two to three business days.
The information being requested is for the purpose of issuing a family member invitation letter. Please call us at 603 646-3474, or email us at Visa.and.Immigration.Services@Dartmouth.edu, if you have any questions.
