    Abstract
    : Promotes the use of health impact assessment (HIA) to help decision-makers in a wide variety of fields better assess proposed policies, programs and projects and make decisions that reduce unnecessary health risks, protect and improve health and, ultimately, decrease health and social costs. The Health Impact Project will support up to 15 HIA demonstration projects intended to inform decisions on proposed local, tribal or state policies, projects or programs. We may also fund a limited number of HIAs that address a federal decision that impacts a specific state, local community or region.

    Abstract
    : Supports scholarly exhibitions and their related publications that contribute significantly to the study of American art. Each proposed project must result in a tangible product that can be added to the body of scholarship in the field of American art. Applicants must be the originator of the exhibition project, not a subsequent venue. All periods and genres of American art history are included. Intellectual merit and potential contribution to scholarship are the most important criteria for evaluating proposals. Demonstrable impact of the artist or subject must be substantiated. The program is aesthetically and object-based and does not include projects that are primarily historical, documentary, sociological, or that concern private collections. Museum permanent collection projects are not included in this category.

    Abstract
    : The William T. Grant Distinguished Fellows Program is designed to increase the supply of, demand for, and use of high-quality research in the service of improved youth outcomes. To accomplish this goal, the program gives influential mid-career researchers the opportunity to immerse themselves in practice or policy settings and conversely influential practitioners and policymakers the opportunity to work in research settings.

    Examples of appropriate fellowships include:
    • A university professor, expert in research on teaching practices in high school, proposes to work for a school year in two large urban high schools (one semester per school).
    • A university-based sociologist, expert in using quantitative methods to estimate the effects of parental job loss on youth, proposes to work full-time for six months in a city’s Department of Labor.

    Note: Recipients are predominantly Ph.D.s and M.D.s affiliated with universities and medical schools.

    Abstract
    : The Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program makes it possible for emerging leaders in U.S. biomedical engineering (or bioengineering) to undertake a self-designed project that will enhance their own careers within the field. For the 2010-11 competition, the Whitaker Program intends to fund approximately fifty high-quality projects. Biomedical engineers can use the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program to go overseas to help further their careers as well as the field of BME. Potential overseas activities could include conducting research at an academic institution, interning at a policy institute, establishing ties between home and host institutions, or pursuing post-doctoral research.

    Abstract
    : The KSTF Research Fellowship is intended to support research aimed at explicating, understanding or enhancing the recruitment, preparation, induction, mentoring and retention of high school science and mathematics teachers in United States schools. The award is intended primarily for salary replacement. However, funds may also be used to purchase research equipment, provide stipends to research participants, travel to conferences to present the research proposed, hire research assistants, work with consultants or to pay for services such as transcription.
