Dartmouth College began the construction of a new eighty bed undergraduate residential facility in the middle of April, 1999. McCulloch Hall was completed during the summer of 2000 and began housing students at the start of fall term 2000. This eighty bed residence hall is part of the East Wheelock Cluster brings the total cluster undergraduate occupancy up from 234 to 314 students.
The building was designed by the architectural firm of Atkin, Olshin, Lawson-Bell, located in Philadelphia, PA. This is the same firm that was involved with the most recent Collis renovation.
Much input was sought from Dartmouth Residential Life staff as well as many students, and the end result reflects many wonderful ideas that make this a great addition to the Dartmouth undergraduate housing inventory.
North Branch Construction located in Henniker, NH was chosen as the construction management firm to handle this project. They spent the spring 1999 term getting the site ready for construction by installing underground drainage, power, and steam lines, and relocating the existing cooling tower that serves Andres, Morton and Zimmerman Halls. The foundation was completed in July, and walls appeared soon after.
The new residence hall is in the shape of an el, with the northern portion being four stories tall. This section then steps down to three stories and finally to two. This has been done to help this new structure fit a site that is framed on one side by four and five story residence halls and on the other sides by two story faculty and staff apartments that are on more of a residential scale.
A two level connector joins this new residence hall to Brace Commons on the lower level and to the Brace deck on the upper level. The lower level is an enclosed walkway, while the upper level is uncovered. Student rooms are set up in suites of four to nine with semi private bathroom facilities. For example, suites with six to eight occupants are served by two separate shower rooms, two separate toilet/lavatory rooms, along with two centrally located sinks.
The new building has an elevator that serves all floors including the basement. This basement area, as well as having the normal Controlled Storage and Trunk Room areas, houses a kitchen, laundry facilities, and a fully accessible seminar room to replace the seminar room formerly located on the fourth floor of Zimmerman.
