Training Requirements

You should be aware of the following training requirements and dates before applying. If you are selected to be a UGA, you will need to plan your travels around these dates.

All fall-term UGAs are required to attend all of Fall Training, participate in First-Year Orientation, and help with first-year and upper-class opening. If you anticipate having a conflict with fall training (such as fall-sport athletes, trip leaders), you should speak to Margaret Leary, Senior Associate Director of Residential Education, prior to applying for a position. (Note that first-year DOC trip leaders should request to lead a trip in the first trips section.)

All summer and winter UGAs should plan to attend the training scheduled for the relevant term.

Spring training is attended only by UGAs who have not been trained previously.

Training is important because:

• You will learn to do your job
• You will have an opportunity to practice and prepare for dealing with some of the more difficult aspects of the UGA position
• Your cluster staff will develop as a team and get to know each other well
• Your cluster staff will develop group norms and expectations and plan for the term
• You will prepare your floor and cluster for resident arrival
• You will help with first-year orientation (even if you do not have first-year students)
• Some of your residents will already be living on your floor - you will be their UGA!

Training Dates

Summer Training 2008

• June 17 - Summer staff arrive by 5:00 p.m. and halls open
• June 18 - Summer staff training/planning

*Additional training for summer UGAs may be scheduled to occur prior to the end of the 2008 spring term.

Fall Training 2008

• September 7 -  UGAs Arrive by 5pm
• September 8-15 - All-Staff Training
  (training dates are subject to change)
• September 16 - First-Year Opening
• September 17-23 - First-Year Orientation
• September 20 - Upper-class Opening
• September 24 - Classes Begin

Winter Symposium and New Staff Training 2009

• January 3 - All staff arrive by 5pm
• January 4 - Winter Symposium and New Staff Training

Spring Arrival and Training 2009

• March 28 - New UGAs and half of staff arrive by 5:00 p.m.
• March 29 - Remaining half of staff arrive by 5:00 p.m.
• March 29 - New staff spring training (only for UGAs who have not been trained previously)
