Step 4. Reference Forms

Reference Form (Word.doc, opens in new window)

A completed reference form should be returned via e-mail to uga@dartmouth.edu.
See complete instructions below.

WINTER APPLICANT DUE DATE:  FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 29TH BY 4:00 PM
SPRING APPLICANT DUE DATE:  THURSDAY, APRIL 10TH BY 4:00 PM

UGA REFERENCE: You will need to have one completed reference submitted for you by your CURRENT UGA.  If you are not currently living in a residence hall, you should ask your most recent UGA to provide your reference.  If your former UGAs are no longer available, you can ask any current or former UGA to provide a reference for you.

If you encounter difficulty securing a reference from your current UGA, please notify the selection coordinator, Jeffrey DeWitt, as soon as you are aware of a possible problem.

AFFINITY UGA CANDIDATES:  If you are applying for an Affinity UGA position, you must obtain a reference from the advisor (or the coordinator or live-in faculty/fellow) for the affinity program to which you would like to apply.  This reference is in addition to the UGA reference that you must obtain.

Affinity UGA positions are in the programs listed below.  If you are interested in being a UGA in an affinity program not listed below, then you do not need this additional reference.

If you apply for an Affinity UGA position in more than one affinity program, you will need a reference form from each advisor/fellow.  Affinity UGA reference writers should be sure to complete the section of the form that is for affinity advisors only, as well as the rest of the form.  The list below indicates who the advisors are for each program.

Chinese Language House (Professor Justin Rudelson)
International Program (Steve Silver, Program Advisor; Patrick Cody, Program Coordinator)
Cutter-Shabazz (Samantha Ivery, Program Advisor)
Foley House (Erika Robinson, Program Advisor)
La Casa (Professor Beatriz Pastor, Program Advisor; Lorgia Garcia-Pena, Live-in Faculty)
Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies House (LALACS): (Alex Hernandez-Siegel, Program Advisor)
Native American House (Joseph Brewer, Program Advisor; Cara Wallace, Program Advisor)

OPTIONAL:  Candidates may choose to have one additional reference provided for them.  This option is intended primarily for candidates who are concerned that their UGA may not know them well enough to provide a thorough and accurate reference. The additional reference can be provided by a peer, employer, professor, coach, dean—anyone who can speak to your qualifications for this position.

Instructions:

  1. Download the above Reference Form.
  2. Fill out the top portion of each form.  The form is a writable word document.
  3. Email the form to the person who will be completing the reference for you.  Do this as soon as possible to ensure that they have enough time to complete and submit the form.
  4. Your reference should submit the complete form via email by sending it to "uga@dartmouth.edu".  Follow-up with your reference to make sure they submit the completed form by the deadline noted above.

Tips for Requesting References

We encourage you to follow these tips when you request a reference from someone. Note that many of these tips are useful anytime you need to ask someone for a reference:

  1. If you do not know your UGA well, this is a good opportunity to begin getting to know her/him.
  2. You should carefully consider whom you ask to complete a reference for you. Your reference should know you well enough to be able to provide the information requested and in sufficient detail as to be useful in the selection process.
  3. Plan ahead. Be sure to give your references plenty of time to complete the reference form. Last-minute requests are bad form and may lead your reference to reject your request or miss the deadline.
  4. Provide your reference with information about the job—such as a job description—so they can provide information about you that is most relevant to the job.
  5. For some jobs, you may want to consider providing your reference with a copy of your résumé, if you have one, so they can see the full range of your experience and skills.
  6. Follow-up with your reference periodically to make sure they are completing the reference form—but don’t be overbearing.
  7. If you are concerned that one of your references will not submit the form by the deadline, you can always ask someone to provide another reference as a back-up.
  8. Be sure to thank your reference afterwards, and let them know whether or not you got the position.
