Graduate Advisor Selection

Overview

Thank you for your interest in a 2009-2010 Graduate Advisor position. We anticipate having two to three openings for the coming year out of the nine positions that we have campus-wide. The information below will give you an overview of the selection process.

Please note that there are several different positions at Dartmouth that are referred to as “graduate advisors." The position to which this information pertains is part of a program administered jointly through the Office of Residential Life and the Graduate Studies Office. There are nine Graduate Advisor positions that fall under this program, each one located in an undergraduate residential cluster and managed by Residential Life staff. There are similar positions in some of the language and affinity houses on campus, as well as in graduate student housing, but these positions do not fall within the Graduate Advisor Program; for information about those positions, please consult the sponsoring department.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the selection coordinator, Krista Beron.

Selection Process Overview

1. Complete an Application

The 2009-2010 application page will be posted on January 9, 2009.  [For reference, the 2008-2009 application can be accessed as a PDF file from the application page.]  Applicants should print the application and provide the information that is requested. Submit the 2009-2010 application by 4:00 pm on February 6, 2009. A few notes about the application:

  • Applicants are required to receive departmental approval before applying for a position.
  • We require you to submit a current resume to accompany your application.
  • In the space provided on the application, please indicate any significant time commitments that you will have during the upcoming year. This would include absences for research, working on a dissertation, travel, residency, and any other commitments that might prevent you from completing the weekly requirements of the position.
  • Indicate if you would accept a placement in a substance-free community. Substance-free communities are residential spaces where residents agree that neither they nor their guests will use or possess alcohol, tobacco products, or illicit drugs in any space within the residence hall, and will not allow use of such substances outside of the hall to have a negative impact on other residents when returning to the community. Note that all residence halls are smoke-free.

2. Obtain a Completed Recommendation Form

The recommendation form can be accessed as a PDF file from the application page. Print the recommendation and complete the waiver information, then give it to your recommender. We suggest that you follow-up periodically with your recommender to ensure that they are completing it by the deadline. You may want to offer to pick up the completed recommendation and hand-deliver it to our office to ensure that it is submitted on time. It is due by 4:00pm on February 6, 2009.

3. Participate in a Candidate Group Interview

Candidates will be screened on the basis of the application and recommendation forms. Candidates who clear the initial screening process will be invited to participate in the group interview. Two different interview times will be offered to candidates. This will be a panel-style interview in which a small group of interviewers, made up of current GAs, Residential Education Staff, and Graduate studies Office Staff, will take turns posing questions to all candidates. When a question is asked, candidates will take turns answering it, then another question will be posed to the group. The cycle will be repeated until all questions have been asked. The interview will take approximately 90 minutes.

4. Participate in an Individual Interview

A group of finalists will be invited to an individual interview that will be conducted by a small committee of interviewers. The interview will last 30-45 minutes, and will cover a wide range of topics related to the GA position.
