I now work at a magazine in the Boston area. For me, publishing has been a great way to have a job with health and other benefits, but also to keep a creative side.
I would encourage graduating students to reserve a place in their homes where they can create art, and to keep in touch with their college artist friends and professors. I found that I needed more patience with the job search than I thought I did, but I am also really glad that I refused to settle for a job with no creative side. Also- create an online portfolio and keep your artist's statements (even if the artist's statements aren't available online), because those two things are incredibly helpful in remembering your creative process and applying for further work.
