Specific Placement Exam Information

As you know from Explore, ENGAGE, Excel, the primary purpose of Placement Exams is to ensure that you are taking courses appropriate for your level of preparation.

Should you take a Placement Exam? If there is a question of placement or if we lack sufficient information in the form of standardized test scores to evaluate advanced preparation, it is recommended that you take the Exam.

Past experience tells us that not all students choose to take Placement Exams. For those who do, some take only one, and others take several.

Scheduling Information

• It is very important that you review the placement exam schedule prior to your arrival on campus.

• All placement exams must be complete by 5pm on Tuesday, September 4 in order for results to be available for fall term course selection on Friday, September 7.

• Students arriving on campus before Tuesday, September 4 for athletics, international student orientation, FYSEP, NLI, or DOC First-Year Trips should plan to take those Placement Exams that are offered in the on-campus Exam Center between Wednesday, August 22 and Monday, September 3.

• • Students arriving on campus to move into their residence hall on Tuesday, September 4 who plan to take Placement Exams should be prepared to take those Placement Exams before 5pm on Tuesday.
  • Please note that Chemistry, Music, and the Chinese speaking portion Placement Exams will only be offered on Tuesday, September 4. They will not be offered before Tuesday, September 4. 
  • It is not possible to schedule alternative times for Placement Exam administration, and it is not possible to arrange early access to student housing for Placement Exam purposes.

• Wednesday, August 22 - Saturday, August 25: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
• Sunday, August 26: CLOSED
• Monday, August 27 - Thursday, August 30: 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
• Friday, August 31 - Saturday, September 1: 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
• Sunday, September 2 - Monday, September 3: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, September 4 - 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Exam Center Location: Moore Hall

• The Exam Center is located in Moore Hall/Psychology Building. Please check-in on the 1st floor in the lobby of Moore Hall. (Across from the entrance to the Psychology Department) You will then be instructed to proceed to either Filene Auditorium or Room B03 to take your exam.

The faculty, administration, and students of Dartmouth College recognize the Academic Honor Principle as fundamental to the education process. Any instance of academic dishonesty is considered a violation of the Academic Honor Principle. Fundamental to the principle of independent learning are the requirements of honesty and integrity in the performance of academic assignments, both in and out of the classroom. Dartmouth operates on the principle of academic honor, without proctoring of examinations. Any student who submits work which is not his or her own, or commits other acts of academic dishonesty, violates the purposes of the college and is subject to disciplinary actions, up to and including suspension or separation. Any student who becomes aware of a violation of the Academic Honor Principle is bound by honor to take some action."

• Special Note for Trips I and J: If you have been scheduled for Trip I or Trip J and need to take the Music, Chemistry, or Chinese speaking placement exams, please contact New Student Orientation or the DOC First-Year Trips Office as soon as possible so that we can work with you individually on our placement needs. • On campus: come by the testing center starting Wednesday, August 22 between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.!
