The Office of Planning, Design & Construction reports to the Provost at
Dartmouth College. Mary Gorman, the Executive Officer and Associate Provost, is
principally responsible for the oversight of PDC.
Director's Office:
- Steve Campbell,
Director of Planning, Design & Construction - Responsible for
leadership of the department and implementation of the College’s capital and
renovation program on the Hanover campus. Steve directs physical planning
and space allocation and advises the College’s senior management on all matters

Associate Directors:
- Jack Wilson, Associate
Director, Planning - Responsible for campus physical planning, capital
project initiation, facility space programming, and architect selection. The
Associate Director for Planning provides stewardship of long-term facilities
issues affecting the College. These issues include sustainable building
practice, building performance, architectural design and the continuance and
enhancement of the special character of the Hanover campus through appropriate
future development. Jack leads the basis-of-design definition of a project

- John Scherding,
Associate Director, Design - Responsible for design-phase activities
of both capital and non-capital projects, the Associate Director for Design
provides oversight of building design at the College and ensures implementation
of sustainable building practices, building performance technologies and
accessibility compliance. John leads the Capital Project Managers and external
design teams, as well as the in-house Architectural Services staff, through the

- Matt Purcell,
Associate Director, Construction - Responsible for the construction
and delivery of building projects, including contractor/construction manager
selection, construction permitting, contract management, construction safety
and risk management. Matt leads the project managers and construction
support personnel during the construction phase and through final occupancy and

Capital Project Management:
Project Managers guide the design and construction process to meet the
approved project goals, budget and schedule. PM’s are engaged in the
project during the conceptual design phase and direct the project through each
stage of design, construction, occupancy and post-occupancy evaluation.
PM’s work closely with the consultants that comprise the design and
construction teams, including architects, engineers, specialty consultants and
contractors/ construction managers. PM’s shepherd projects through the
permitting phases and manage internal communication with Dartmouth
constituencies.

Architectural Services:
Architectural Services is comprised of design professionals capable of
performing in-house architectural design and construction management services
on small- to medium-scale projects. Architectural Services staff will
typically execute projects from their inception through the completion of
construction, working with consultants as needed for technical and engineering
support. Architectural Services staff also maintains the College's
space management system.
Project Support
- Joanna Whitcomb -
Planner - Responsible for campus planning that integrates land use and
buildings with natural resources, transportation, parking and other
infrastructure. Joanna supports the associate director of planning; assists
with master planning and precinct planning; and works with local planners on

Manager – Responsible for financial services support of PDC, including
maintenance of office and project budgets, database management and financial
reporting. Brenda is also responsible for the overall management of the
office, including information storage systems, website development, and
