Construction Update, November 21, 2008

SPECIAL NOTICES:

Construction will be taking place during the Thanksgiving week except for Thanksgiving day itself (working on Friday).  Please do not park in the circle while construction activities are ongoing.

Please note that the project's intention, and current plan, is to not affect bus service in front of Vail for the duration of the project.  We will be pouring the new sidewalk area near the existing blue phone in December.  The bus shelter will then be moved back to the final location.  There will be some temporary sidewalk shifts during this time of construction but an access from Vail/Remsen/Dana to the bus stop will remain intact.

Construction Activities for the Next Two Weeks:

  • Sidewalk and paving work around Dana.
  • Storm drainage work continuing at the north end of Vail.
  • Continue sanitary sewer line install on site.
  • Piles and shoring system installation will continue.
  • Mass excavation of soil to begin.
  • North entrance to Dana to be closed for a few days in early December.  It will not be closed until the Dana-Gilman connector is back open.
  • Selective demolition and foundation work for the LSC/Vail connector building will be starting in early December.  This will be at the north end of Vail and behind the construction fencing.
  • Construction of the Bicycle Shelter foundation will start in early December.  It is located between the Derzon courtyard and the new LSC main building entrance.

Closures, access issues, traffic changes, etc.

  • Gilman-Dana connector door closed
  • Dewey Field Road intersection will see less traffic impacts
  • Vail/Dana Circle closed except for buses, construction and emergency vehicles.
  • The roadway between the Vail parking lot and the west portion of the construction site will be affected by utility excavation work over the coming months.  Traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways will fluctuate with the various activities.  At times, traffic will be routed through the Vail parking lot, etc.  Please look for signs, flaggers, etc, and notifications in these look-ahead notices.
  • Sidewalk east of Dana (along College Street) will be reconstructed in December once other walks in area are in.

Please note that construction schedules and activities change on a daily basis due to weather, unexpected underground utility or other subsurface conditions, staffing issues, etc.  This look-ahead schedule is intended to give everyone a general idea of what activities are happening in your area for the week ahead.  Pertinent items such as door closures, traffic impacts, etc will be more precise and may warrant additional notifications between weekly reports.

Construction Update, November 3, 2008

SPECIAL NOTICES:

Vail Circle for Advanced Transit and Construction Vehicles Only

The circle in front of Vail has begun the changes toward the new configuration. There cannot be any parking, idling or other activity that will impede the flow of buses and traffic. Any cars or other vehicles entering the construction site will run the risk of damage to the vehicle and safety of the people in them.  Please use the existing fenced in pedestrian walkway around the circle to access Vail and Dana.

Construction Activities for the Next Two Weeks:

  • Continued drainage, sidewalk, concrete steps and site lighting conduit work around Dana Library.
  • Continued sound barrier fence install around the west and north sections of the construction site.  Fence will be installed in the parking lot island behind Vail.  The sound barrier mats will be hung on the fence sections at west and north.
  • Install of permanent erosion control measures
  • Storm drainage work continuing at the west end of the project, north of Vail.
  • Temporary site lighting north of Dana
  • Begin sanitary sewer line install in Dewey Field Road.
  • A test pile for shoring system will be installed on November 10, 2008.
  • Preparation for mass excavation of soil.
  • Installation of soldier pile system

Closures, access issues, traffic changes, etc.:

  • Gilman-Dana connector door closed
  • Dewey Field Road intersection will see traffic impacts
  • Vail Circle closed to all non Construction Traffic
  • The roadway between the Vail parking lot and the west portion of the construction site will be affected by utility excavation work over the coming months.  Traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways will fluctuate with the various activities.  At times, traffic will be routed through the Vail parking lot, etc.  Please look for signs, flaggers, etc, and notifications in these look-ahead notices.

Construction Update, October 24, 2008

An information kiosk has been installed on the fencing along the main sidewalk into Vail (near the circle). The kiosk will contain a three-week "look-ahead" schedule from the building's contractors, as well as miscellaneous maps and other information about ongoing construction activities.

Construction activities for the next two weeks includes the following:

  • Storm drainage and site work between Dana and Gilman Halls
  • Sidewalk construction between Dana and College Street
  • Installation of sound barrier fencing at West and North project boundaries
  • Vail circle reconfiguration for construction vehicles and Advance Transit buses only
  • Installation of permanent erosion control and sediment treatment measures
  • Completion of water main along Dewey Field Road
  • Storm drainage work at Northwest corner of site along Dewey Field Road
  • Temporary site lighting North of Dana
  • Initial excavation and installation of sanitary sewer line into Lyme Road

Starting next week, there will also be some traffic changes and access issues arise. Specific items include the following:

  • If the weather cooperates, temporary pavement for the new Vail Circle entrance will be constructed on Monday
  • Dewey Field Road intersection will see traffic impacts with the sewer work in roadway
  • Pedestrian access will continue on the main walkway to Vail and the westerly walkway on the north side of Dana. Pedestrian pathways around the circle will vary with activities. Please follow signs and temporary fencing.

Please note that the Vail Circle is to be used only for construction vehicles, emergency vehicles and AT buses. Please do not drop-off or park in the Vail Circle.

In addition, please note the following impacts from construction that will occur in November.

  • The North entrance to Dana will be closed for a few days in early to mid-November.
  • The sidewalk along College Street will be reconstructed in early to mid-November once new walks are built between Dana and College Street.
  • Large-scale earthwork operations will begin in November after the sound fence is complete and approved by the Town of Hanover.
  • On November 3rd, the contractor will install a test pile for temporary soil retainment during construction. This is to determine the best and least intrusive method of installing the piles.

Please note that construction schedules and activities change on a daily basis due to weather, unexpected underground utility or other subsurface conditions, staffing issues, etc. Pertinent items such as door closures, traffic impacts, etc. will be more precise and may warrant additional notifications between these bi-weekly reports.

As always, Safety and Security officers are currently posted in the Dewey Parking lot between 5 AM and 7 AM to ensure that no deliveries occur.

Construction Update, October 10, 2008

Preliminary Site work and mobilization continues for the Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center.

Thank you to everyone who came to our Community Meeting on Monday, October 6, 2008. At the meeting, we briefly reviewed the overall project, and then discussed construction site logistics as well as the work plan for the next three to six months. We will hold community meetings on this project every three months, and our next meeting is scheduled for January 12, 2009 at 7pm. We will send a reminder announcement as we get closer to that date.

During the next two weeks, work will consist of the following:

  • Installation of the 12 foot sound attenuation fence along the West and North project boundaries
  • Completion of water main installation in the College Street and Lyme Rd intersection
  • Installation of the storm drain and catch basins along the edge of Dewey Field Road
  • Installation of storm drainage between Dana Library and Gilman Hall
  • Continued installation of erosion control and sediment treatment facilities along project periphery
  • Construction of temporary site utilities
  • Reconfiguration of the Vail Circle perimeter sidewalk and curbing
  • Installation of temporary pedestrian lighting in the area between Dana Library/Gilman Hall and College Street

In addition to the work described above, the bus terminal will be temporarily relocated early next week so we can complete the construction of the revised Vail Circle. Notifications will be placed on the bus terminal when the time and date for the relocation is confirmed.

Please remember that only Advanced Transit buses and construction vehicles are allowed in the Vail circle. All other drop-offs and deliveries need to be made at other entrances to the buildings.

There will be some minor impact of traffic at the Lyme Rd/College Street/Park Street intersection when the contractor completes the installation of the water pipe and sanitary sewer connections. Signage will be erected and traffic officers will be on hand to assist motorists around the work.

Finally, the doorways from the Dana/Gilman Connector to College Street will remain closed until October 20.

Safety and Security officers are currently posted in the Dewey Parking lot between 5 AM and 7 AM to prevent early deliveries before the start of construction.

As promised, a 24-hour phone line for the LSC project has been established. Please call 603-646-6566 to report any incidents of concern. You can also email the project managers directly at life-sciences-center@mac.dartmouth.edu
