The Thayer School's tradition of balancing research with teaching will be
maintained and enhanced in this new mixed-use facility through the addition of
the following spaces:
- 8 undergraduate student project work areas
- 2 smart classrooms
- 3 conference/study rooms
- 5 studio labs, which will help to integrate information technology more
effectively into teaching
- 8 additional faculty offices
- 2 research labs designed to ensure casual interaction between students and
faculty
The exterior focal point of the new building is the new entry courtyard for
the Thayer School complex. A 3-story atrium with a granite floor ties the new
building to Cummings Hall and provides an interior pathway with windows into
both student laboratory spaces and project display cases. This visibility of
the lab spaces continues throughout the building, providing the opportunity for
the process of engineering to be revealed.
MacLean ESC was designed and built with a focus on energy conservation, with
the goal of receiving U.S. Green Building Council LEED Silver certification
utilizing:
- High-performance building envelope featuring spray-foam insulation and
triple-glazed windows
- High-volume variable-speed cooling and ventilation system with enthalpy
wheel energy recovery
- Radiant floor heating in the 40-foot tall atrium
