Dartmouth Plug-In Fleet - why not?

Posted by Joanna on Nov 10th, 2008

Inspired by Dan Reicher, CEO Google.org, and Matt Cloyd ‘10-SLC, I think we should consider converting some of Dartmouth’s vehicles to electric or when we’re buying a new vehicle- buy an electric plug-in.  We should take advantage of the north side of Dewey Field lot with it’s south-facing slopes and install an array of solar panels adjacent to all of those empty parking spaces.  It’s near the maintenance building and for those employees needing to use a college vehicle but not located in the north part of campus, shuttles already serve the Dewey Lot.  How cool to reduce Dartmouth’s GHG generated by its fleet!

Increase in Parking Spaces

October parking lot counts show a marked increase in the number of empty spaces.  Why are Dewey Field and Thompson more empty this fall than for the previous 4 years?  Suggestions include change in driving habits - more people are riding the bus, 4 new vanpools since August, less employees on the main campus…why do you think the vacancy rates are up?

Robotic Parking

At the start of the 20th century, America had only 8,000 cars driving on 144 miles of paved road.  At that time, most Americans who were fortunate enough to be working did so in the community in which they resided. There was no need to commute, and most families remained close to home.

Today with an estimated 206 million vehicles in the U.S., that’s 10 people per car, it’s no secret that Americans have a passion for automobiles and a strong need for automotive transportation. Experts predict that in the next 20 years the number of vehicles in the world will double, and traffic congestion will become 10 times worse than it is today.  Continue Reading »

The Town of Hartford recently received a municipal park and ride grant to construct a 48 vehicle parking lot on Route 5.  The lot will have bike racks and a bus shelter and is located near Hartford High School, adjacent to the Mobile Station and across from the cemetary (see the proposed site plan) Continue Reading »

Dartmouth’s Half Million Dollar TDM Programs

Posted by Joanna on Jul 18th, 2008

At the June Commuting Breakfast, Bill Barr presented Dartmouth’s package of transportation demand management programs to an employee-filled Alumni Hall.   Feedback from the breakfast has encouraged Dartmouth’s parking and transportation committee to pursue additional programs for faculty, staff and students.  Such new programs may include vanpools, expanded opportunities for cyclists and maybe even Zipcars.
