Community Gardens
Last night I stumbled upon the Hartland Garden website. In my eyes this really celebrates the Upper Valley. It’s particularly great that the town of Hartland has supported the effort and the group has received grants to help them get started. Of course, I may be influenced by the Hanover Reservoir Road Gardens as we gear up for our “green up” efforts on Saturday. I think we’ll be seeing more requests for this kind of community endeavor…so what are Upper Valley towns doing with their prime agricultural lands?
4th & 5th Graders Design
Yesterday I had the pleasure of helping with a design charette at the local elementary school. ORW, landscape architects, orchestrated a fascinating afternoon for 28 4th & 5th graders. The students’ charge was to collect information about their school yard. They were given a map and series of questions - how do walkers and bikers enter the school grounds? how much grass & mud? where do the buses go? etc. After gathering the data, the students returned to the art room to record their findings on the big site plan and share them with the group. Next Wednesday afternoon, the students return to the “studio” to re-design the space. Can’t wait!

Mastering Density
The Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission brought a recent APA web conference to Dartmouth this afternoon. The crowd was made up mostly Hanover folks with a planner from Acworth and Lebanon attending. Like many APA educational efforts, Mastering Density, focused on urban environs (70-120 units/acre) though the big take aways are pertinent to any locale. Good design of structures and adjacent space are critical to healthy, attractive density.
