OPAL is pleased to announce the appointment of Jennifer M. D. Matos as Dartmouth's Advisor to Latina/o Students and Assistant Dean of Student Life in the Office of Pluralism and Leadership (OPAL).
Jennifer comes to Dartmouth with experience in social justice education, advising, and residential life. Most recently, she was the Director of Multicultural Affairs at Simon's Rock in Great Barrington, MA and an Area Coordinator in Residence Life at Smith College. Concurrently she is also a 4th year doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the Social Justice Education program, where her dissertation is on the positive roles that Latino parents play in the educational outcomes of their children.
Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature in 1997 from Smith College. After her graduation from Smith, she worked in the Residence Life departments at Smith College and later at Mt. Holyoke College, where she was also appointed as an Advisor to students of color. In 2002, Jennifer returned to Smith to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching and certification as a Massachusetts State high school English teacher in 2003. After earning her Master's, Jennifer worked at Clark University as the Assistant Dean of Students and Coordinator of ALANA and GLBT Student Development. Included in her accomplishments includes her work as an Area Coordinator in Residence Life, serving as Smith College's Advisor to the Latina Student organization Nosotras and the programming co-chair on the Executive Board of ALAS (Association of Latina Alumnae at Smith).
Jennifer comes to Dartmouth with wonderful experience and a passion for working with students. We are very excited to have her join us in the work of supporting the academic success and leadership development of all students.
